My approach to design
With over 30 years’ experience as a branding and literature designer, I bring big-agency thinking to small and medium-sized businesses. My passion is helping business owners build clear, consistent and confident brands through thoughtful design and well-structured brand materials. It’s a job I genuinely love, and I immerse myself in every project from start to finish, whatever the size.
My journey began as the graphic designer at Samsung Europe, followed by roles within top London design agencies, where I spent 15 years honing my creative skills while working with well-known brands across a wide range of exciting projects. Today I channel that experience and energy into helping my own clients develop strong business branding for both print and digital platforms, having founded Jo Roper Design in 2013.
Every project begins with understanding. From our first conversation through to strategy meetings and briefing sessions, I take time to explore your business, understand the brief and uncover what you’re really trying to achieve. That insight shapes every design decision that follows. Throughout the process, I keep coming back to the same question: “What’s the real story here?” Once that’s understood, the design becomes much clearer.
Having studied Product Design before completing my BA (Hons) degree in Design, my approach naturally differs slightly from many in the graphic design profession, or so I’m told. It’s methodical and precise, balanced with an inquisitive nature and creative versatility that allows me to explore each client’s business in depth and fully understand their brand requirements. I enjoy breaking down ideas, testing different approaches and refining them until the structure feels just right.
A creative process
Outside of work, I’m also an AFOL — an Adult Fan of Lego. I enjoy creating my own Lego builds, a process that involves building, dismantling and rebuilding until everything works just right. In many ways it mirrors how I approach design projects: exploring ideas, refining the structure and carefully crafting a solution that feels both creative and purposeful. The same principles apply whether I’m developing a brand identity, designing a brochure or structuring a website.
Working with clients
Branding sits at the heart of everything I do. Over time this has evolved into a distinctive part of my offering: beautifully designed, bespoke Word and PowerPoint templates that help businesses maintain brand consistency across everyday documents and presentations.
What sets Jo Roper Design apart is that every template and website I deliver comes with its own clear, step-by-step user guide. This enables your team to confidently create documents, presentations and website updates in-house, saving time, reducing external costs and keeping your brand consistent across every piece of communication.
Alongside these digital solutions, I continue to design more traditional brand materials, including corporate brochures, reports and complete brand identities. When a project requires additional expertise, I collaborate with a trusted network of specialists who share my attention to detail and commitment to quality.
Studio and inspiration
Much of my inspiration comes from the surroundings of my studio in Frinton-on-Sea, Essex, where the sea views and striking sunrises provide a constant source of creative energy. The studio is just a short walk from the station, making it easy to meet clients locally or to travel into London to work alongside collaborators.
Whether you’re refreshing an existing identity, building a brand from the ground up, looking for an elegant brochure or developing a bespoke website, my aim is always the same: to deliver thoughtful, well-crafted design that helps your business stand out with clarity and confidence.
Today I draw on my breadth of experience to bring strategic thinking, practical solutions and considered design to every client I work with – without the big-agency overheads.
If you’d like to discuss a project, I’d love to hear from you.
